We need to pay attention to the Greek surprise team
We are hosting Greek side Olympiacos, who have shattered Kraków's Euroleague dreams in the qualifiers, at 6 pm on Thursday.
Our opponents have shown a great team effort in the qualifiers and after a draw (63-63) in Greece they have earned a spot in the Euroleague group phase with a fantastic win (46-47) in Kraków. Let's take a look at the Greek heroes!
They have started a conscious process of team building years ago in which they have aimed to create a consistent domestic core. They have managed to do that with slight changes. In their current roster no less than six member os the Greek national team are present, which brought not only a better performance from Olympiacos, but also that of their national team. However, EuroLeague is a totally different level than EuroCup. Here you can't be successful without quality international players. This is why they only kept one international player from last year's roster. Croatian Mirna Mazic represents experience with her 32 years of age. They were looking for three more international players besides her who might become franchise players under the coordination of head coach George Pantelakis. This is how Rita Rasheed moved to Olympiacos, who has suffered a serious injury to her knee during pre-season. They have signed two players from overseas. 24-year-old Jessica Thomas came to the perimeter positions, and 29-year-old Lykendra Johnson came in as a post player. Both of them spend around 30 minutes on court, and had an important role in having played a tight game against Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce (54-63).
Our team has begun the EuroLeague campaign with an unpleasant defeat, but the win in Szekszárd at the weekend gave us reasons to hope for a better continuation. Let's ope that France was just a slight detour, and on Thursday on our home court we will not let ourselves be tricked by the Greek. For that we will need maximum focus!
Before the game Candice Dupree shared her expectations with our staff.
