Russian team Kursk take no risks in preparing for their next game, so they have arrived to Sopron early Tuesday afternoon with great players such as Breanna Stewart, Tina Charles, Sonja Petrovic, Anna Cruz and Marta Xargay on their roster, just to mention the biggest names.
The most well-known player on the team is Breanna Stewart, who is considered the best in the world. Her first season in Europe is drawing a lot of attention, so it is not a coincidence that many people from abroad have already inquired about tickets to the game (there will be no pre-orders this time either, tickets can only be purchased at the venue!).
The basketball player who is still only 24 years old has as they say taken it all this season. She led Seattle to a WNBA title first, then did the same thing with USA Basketball in the World Cup. What's more, she was named MVP, aka the Most Valuable Player on both occasions. It says it all about her talent that she has won the Basketball Player of the Year award at the age of 17, and she has won it another time since then, becoming one of the seven players even to be able to do that. The only players who have won the award more than twice are Teresa Edwards (3 times) and Diana Taurasi (4 times). Looking at her great success this season we can be sure that she will be tied with Edwards by the end of the year in this respect. No wonder she has secured magazine covers back in her college years already. Playing for UCONN legendary coach Geno Auriemma made her into an all-round player who knows everything about basketball. She entered WNBA in 2016 as a four-time NCAA champion, where she got the Rookie of the Year award without question. It was no surprise, considering that in her debut season she became the player who scored the second most points in a single game (38) right behind Australian national hero Lauren Jackson (47). With 277 rebounds grabbed in a single season she broke Lisa Leslie's record set in 2004. The award for the best rebounder was given to her tied with Tina Charles who had the best rebounds average per game. Yes, the latter will also be towering over the court on Thursday evening in Novomatic Aréna as well.
Stewart first landed in China after the American continent, and then turned towards Europe making a big sensation after Kursk having no stones left unturned to have the best basketball player on the globe join their roster, making it possible for Sopron fans to see her doing her magic in person.
Knowing Roberto Iniguez we can be sure that he has already figured something out to stop the well-oiled high-tech Russian machine. Those who will attend the Euroleague match-up between our team and Kursk will be going home with an experience of a lifetime.
Our head coach Roberto Iniguez spent two wonderful years with us, who has visited our Managing Director Zoltán Török as promised with whom they agreed in a discussion about the future that he will come back to Sopron one day
Csodálatos két évet töltött nálunk vezetőedzőnk, Roberto Iniguez, aki ígéretéhez híven a hétvége során meglátogatta ügyvezetőnket, Török Zoltánt, akivel a jövőt is érintő beszélgetés során abban maradtak, hogy egy napon még visszatér Sopronba
We built on our strong start in the third game of the Hungarian league finals and ended the season on an unbeaten record as champions!
