We are about to live up to the reputation of our club and town in the highest-ranked international series, Euroleague this year as well. Wednesday at 6 p.m. we will begin our journey against the 2014 winner of the series, last season's EuroCup semi-finalist Galatasaray at Novomatic Aréna.
The head coach of the Turkish club is Marina Maljkovic, who achieved a lot of great things with the Serbian national team. Under her control thex finished third in last year's domestic championship. After the successful build-up last year they are trying to compete on the highest level again this season. Looking at the roster they can compete with anyone in regards of international players, but on the other hand the Turkish core sitting on the bench has only Isil Alben to show sufficient amount of international experience.
Let's take a look at the international players now! The first place goes without question to Allie Quigley, who signed with Galatasaray from their arch nemesis Fenerbahce. On the perimeter we can also find French Point Guard Olivia Epoupa, and Jelena Dubljevic, who has seen many battles. Lithuanian Petronyte rises under the rims, helped by Dutch Van Grinsven. The last player is not so widely known here in Hungary, unlike in Turkey, where she is a solid choice as an international player.
Our team is over 3 championship games. In those cases we decided the game pretty early, so it is hard to tell what we could achieve on Wednesday. Although that is clear, that the chemistry between the players and the Spanish coaching staff is getting better and better. It might add a lot to the team's performance that Yvonne Turner got completely used to being back with us during the last week, and Crystal Langhorne playe dat the weekend in a way that allows us to be optimistic about her. We can see that the fans are moved by the performance shown by the team, they got more interested in them. Their support can mean a lot for the ladies.
We asked head coach Roberto Iniguez after the Monday evening training:
The game can be followed via online stream at FIBA Youtube channel. Tickets to the game available at the venue at the price of 1300 HUF. Entry below 14 and above 70 years of age is free of charge!
At some point in the game we led by as much as twenty points, then Galatasaray bounced back and made it a one-possession game, but the girls held on to the remains of their former lead and got a huge win on the road in Istanbul
