Who would have thought back in 2018 that a year later we would be able to host the Euroleague FINAL4 again? Well, the world set their eyes on Sopron again, because the decision-makers at FIBA thought that only the experience staff of our club would be able to organize the event on a high level within three weeks. We did it! Unfortunately, the team wasn’t able to deliver a surprise that time, but the girls have caused us some memorable moments on the way.
Their seven points scored in quick succession gave the control over the game to Ekaterinburg early on, but we didn’t want to fall behind, which was best signalled by the triple by Amanda (3rd minute 7-3). What’s more, four minutes later we caught up with the Russians already (16-16)! From that point on we had the control and – thanks to two long shots by Yvonne – the advantage as well (10th minute 17-24)!
Alba Torrens brought her team closer to us with two shots from downtown, which gave pace to Ekaterinburg, and after three minute it was Roberto Iniguez’s turn to call a time-out. We were, however, unable to stop our rivals on offense, who took over the lead again keeping up their rhythm in the middle of the quarter (15th minute 31-30).
Ekaterinburg came up with a 7-2 run in five minutes forcing Roberto Iniguez’s next time-out and then with a double by Griner the difference grew to ten points for the first time in the game (25th minute 51-41). That gave a boost to our rivals who put four more points in-between until the end of the period (30th minute 60-46).
We tried everything to come closer to the Russians at the beginning of the final stage of the game, but they had an answer to everything we came up with, and with four minutes remaining on the game clock the game was decided by a triple by McBride (36th minute 72-54). The last few minutes didn’t bring any more surprises, Ekaterinburg won the game confidently, and made it to the Euroleague Final (40th minute 81-59).
