Briann got the game going with a double, after which Tina first missed two free throws, then stole the ball under the home basket and ran down the court with it for a lay-up (2nd minute 4-0). Briann made another shot, this time for three points, and then after Gabby’s first basket it was time for Attila Földi to call a time-out (9-0). Gabby kept delivering on offense after the short break, while at the other end the away side scored their first points thanks to Vitola. Even though we were able to further increase our lead after the time-out, the Diósgyőr side were able to find their way to the rim more and more times, causing Dávid Gáspár to call his first time-out (8th minute 21-7). The team were neck and neck after the break, which meant that we were going into the short break in possession of a double-digit lead (10th minute 25-13).
Nina Aho fought for a double at the beginning of the second period, then Tina scored from close in, and Jeca converted Dalma’s assist into two points (13th minute 29-17). Approaching the middle of the quarter we pulled a little further away from our opponents, forcing Attila Földi to call his next time-out (15th minute 34-19). Briann made two free throws after the brief pause, to which Aho answered back with a double, and then our American point guard also scored for two. In the closing minutes of the half we were trying to increase our lead to twenty, which we managed to to thanks to a lay-up by Jeca after a penetration move (47-27), but Angelika Kiss was also able to score, forcing Dávid Gáspár to call his next time-out. Briann closed the first half with a double, giving us a comfortable lead (20th minute 49-29).
Aho made a triple after the half-time break, and Gabby came up with two free throws, and a three-point play. In this period the away side did everything in their power to coem closer to us, and after four minutes of play Dávid Gáspár had to call a time-out (14th minute 56-41). Jeca made a free throw after the talk, which was the only point for a while, and then a couple minutes later she went back behind the line for another foul shot (17th minute 58-41). Szonja Vukov put an end to the Diósgyőr scoring drought with a corner three, and then Angelika Kiss was successfukl from close in. The guests found their rhythm, and came even closer with a triple by Medgyessy, so the three by Dalma came just at the right time, what’s more, Zsófi also put two points on the board before the end of the quarter (30th minute 63-49).
Megan opened the final stage of the game with a corner three, to which Angelika Kiss answered back from inside the paint. Then came an exchange of buckets between Jeca and Vitola with the former scoring for two and the latter for three points (34th minute 68-54). After that we got some air thanks to a 5-2 run, however, our head coach wasn’t happy with what was happening on court, so he called another time-out (37th minute 73-56). In the closing minutes both sides were able to find the basket on multiple occasions, but by the end of the game the difference from back at half time got reset (40th minute 82-62).
Dávid Gáspár: I am happy about the win, which I have also told the team, because we are after an incredibly tough week, in which we played three games. We are still working on getting our shape and our rhythm back, , but to be able to do so we still ned lots of games and practices where we can work with a complete roster. We haven't had the chance to do that lately. In the third quarter we fell out of rhythm, so I cannot be satisfied with our overall performance. We want to extend our good run. We were unable to do that in tonight's game, but I am content with how we played in the first half, so that is what we want to build on in the future.
Megan Walker: I think we played well tonight. We are still trying to get our rhythm back after the long break, but the team managed to stay successful on court, and that is the most important thing.
Attila Földi: Congratulations to Sopron. I think the result reflects reality. We wanted to play a good game, which we were able to do from time to time, but we slept on the first period, and it is very hard to come back and chase a team of this caliber. We can be happy for not giving up, and we had some periods where we were back in the game. That took a lot out of us, so the final result reflects reality after a start like this.
Nina Aho: We are disappointed, because we came here to win. Aside from that we could play a good game. Our offense and defense is getting better and better, so I think we are on the right track to show who we are. I am sorry for not being able to get closer to Sopron in the third quarter, but we held on until the end, and fought well.
